Welcome to Burntwood and Vintage. We are a small business in Cornwall that focuses on quirky renovations, vintage building and charred wood.
We specialise in burnt wood but also provide services that include other materials such as concrete, metal and stone.
We only use the best quality products and focus on using natural and ethically sourced materials.
At Burntwood & Vintage we offer van living renovations, house renovations/extensions, event building, design and cabin building.
Our burnt wood style originated from ancient Chinese building techniques known as Shou sugi ban and/or Yakisugi. A method of wood preservation where you char wood to create a lovely burnt effect. Each piece of wood is unique and adds great character to whatever its being used for.
THE BEAUTY OF WOOD
"This slow dissolution of wooden buildings, the inexorable but never complete erasure of the human imprint, is one of their unique features. All built surfaces become weathered and acquire patina, but few do so in the meaningful and expressive way of ageing wood. Patterns of use are progressively revealed, while the narrative of the seasonal rigs is more clearly exposed and the logic of the structure emerges into plain sight. Flat surfaces become conciliatory, corners turn equivocal, straight lines curve, the continuous becomes fractured and the whole built structure shifts towards the organic fuzziness of the growing tree.In the end the timbers decompose, return to earth and are recycled as new trees, and the ultimate virtue of wooden architecture - sustainability - is confirmed."
